Ambulances get sirens you can FEEEL

The largest ambulance company in Oklahoma will be the first ambulance service in the US to install Howler sirens to its entire fleet. These sirens are designed to emit low-frequency tones that can go through objects that are within 200 feet-- including cars. This way, even when you're in your car with your radio cranked up to the highest volume, you'll eventually "feel" something whenever an emergency vehicle turns up.
Why are they doing this?
"So far this year, EMSA vehicles have been involved in 16 intersection accidents, typically caused by an unyielding driver. Fifteen of those times, the ambulances were on a call, said EMSA spokeswoman Tina Wells.

'The most frequent thing motorists say to us is they didn't see the ambulance coming,' Wells said at a Tuesday news conference, where the new technology was demonstrated." (TAP, 2008)

I think this is a pretty neat idea, and I'm curious as to how it "feels" like. (I read that it sounds like a 1980s video games...)
Hopefully, the emergency vehicles in our area will be outfitted with these new Howler sirens soon, so our community will become safer. :)
