Job cuts, lower income, Google delay a tripple-whammy for Yahoo
With Yahoo's low third-quarter earnings comes layoffs. Even though user-growth numbers are up, low numbers for the company's advertising businesses are making a big impact. As much of 10% of Yahoo's work force may be laid off in the next couple of weeks.
Microsoft delaying Xbox Live Primetime
At E3 last summer, Microsoft announced the coming of a new piece of its larger Xbox Live puzzle called "Primetime". Primetime is basically a series of game shows people can join along with their friends. Microsoft, who say they are very dedicated to the concept of Primetime, consider this a chance to polish it up. Primetime was originally planned to be released on Nov. 19.

While technology and science isn't the most talked about topic in the recent debates, the presidential candidates have both talked about some broad policy proposals and goals, perhaps in hopes of trying to stop the country's decline in global technological competitiveness. Obama says he will change the posture of the federal government to one that embraces science and technology, promises to double the fund for basic research, appoint the country's first chief technology officer, and other things. McCain has not said anything directly about increasing funds, but he has said that he favors technology-friendly policies aimed at the private sector through things like low taxes. Among other things, he also said he would allow companies to write off the cost of new equipment and technology for their first year.
Basically, both candidates have talked about educational reforms that they say will help the country be more competitive in science and technology.
Our Dangerous E-Mail Addiction
Because of the troubled economy, many people believe that they must stay by their e-mail (using phones) and/or be in contact with their work place 24/7 or risk getting laid off. This may be dangerous though, because people have been sending e-mails while driving, while in the bathroom, and even in the air although they specifically ask for you to keep your phones off. There are also people who never leave their work phones, even on vacations and weekends, which isn't very good for them, since eventually they'll burn out and won't even be able to work anymore.
The point is, take a break.
